A MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM DR. JACK VAN IMPE

Pneumatology, the doctrine of the Person and work of the blessed Holy Spirit, has often been misunderstood and abused. This is particularly true in our 21st century. The basis for the present confusion is a lack of knowledge of the Word of God. This situation is totally unnecessary because hundreds of scriptural portions describe in detail the Person and work of this wonderful third Person of the Trinity. Our study will take into consideration scores of these verses. In discussing this blessed third member of the Trinity, let us consider (1) His divinity, and (2) His personality.

HIS DIVINITY

The Holy Spirit is divine - that is, He is God. He is as much God as the Father or the Son. The fifth chapter of Acts makes this emphatically clear. Ananias and Sapphira plotted to cheat the Lord. As they were about to enact their hypocritical deed, Peter cried out in verse 3: Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost . . . ? Then in verse 4 Peter continued: . . . thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. The Holy Spirit of verse 3 is the God mentioned in verse 4.

This God is also called the spirit of the Lord in Isaiah 11:2, and His attributes are gloriously described in such terminology as: ". . . the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord." He is called the Spirit of God in Genesis 1:2 and the Spirit of Christ in Romans 8:9. We see then that the SPIRIT who is so closely identified with the Father and the Son is GOD, the third member of the Trinity He is also the Eternal Spirit (Hebrews 9:14). He always was, is, and shall be.

Genesis 1:1, 2 reads: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. The word God in the clause In the beginning God created . . . is the Hebrew word Elohim, a plural noun, meaning more than one or simply a trinity We find this same plural in Ecclesiastes 12:1 which states in the original Hebrew Old Testament: Remember now thy Creators in the days of thy youth . . . This same Trinity creates man in Genesis 1:26, for God said: . . . Let us make man in our image.

Most people agree that God the Father created the world and mankind, but argue angrily when one suggests that Christ and the Holy Spirit were part of the plurals just mentioned. However, let's allow the Word of God to speak for itself. We know that Christ helped create the world and mankind because John 1:10 states: [Christ] was in the world, and the world was made by him . . . . And Colossians 1:16 adds: For by [Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth . . . . The Holy Spirit also was a partner in this creation, for Job 26:13 declares: By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens . . . . So we see the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as coequal laborers in the beginning. It is as plain as the nose on one's face. Because of their limited grasp of spiritual truths, men mock the doctrine of the Trinity. God says: But the natural [or unsaved] man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (I Corinthians 2:14). True believers are enlightened by the Holy Spirit, who wrote in I Corinthians 2:12: Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

The Holy Spirit Wrote the Bible

Continued evidence that the Holy Spirit is God is found in the fact that the Holy Spirit wrote the Holy Bible. Second Timothy 3:16 states: All scripture is given by inspiration of God . . . . Who is this God? Which member of the Trinity is given the credit for writing the Holy Book? Second Peter 1:21 answers this question: For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Yes . . . God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God (I Corinthians 2:10).

Peter, in the great Pentecostal address, declares that David's prophecy concerning Judas came by the Holy Spirit. He says: Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus (Acts 1:16). There is no doubt about it - the Old and New Testaments were written by God and this God was and is the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit's Titles and Attributes

Further proof of the Holy Spirit's deity is found in His titles and attributes. He is called the Spirit of Grace, Holiness, Judgment, Knowledge, Life, Love, Might, Promise, Prophecy, Revelation, Supplication, Truth, Understanding, and Wisdom. He is described as omnipotent (all powerful) as to Christ's resurrection, because Christ was quickened (made alive) by the Spirit (I Peter 3:18). He is also omniscient (knowing all things) because I Corinthians 2:10, 11 states: . . . the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. He is also omnipresent (everywhere at all times). The psalmist cries out in Psalm 139:7-10: Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. It is clear that the reference is directly pointing to the Holy Spirit in this contextual setting.

This same Spirit, like Christ, is Truth, for "the Spirit is truth" (I John 5:6) and also Holiness. His name the "Holy Spirit", certainly verifies this attribute. Because of this title, it is He who copes directly with the sin nature in the believer and is the only existing power by which that nature is ever controlled. This does not imply superior holiness over the Father and the Son. It is impossible for the inner character of one Person in the Godhead to be more holy than that of another; distinction must lie then within the sphere of that which is the official responsibility of the Spirit. This third Person undoubtedly has a special appointment to manifest, as well as defend, the infinite holiness of God. This holiness of each member of the Trinity is praised by God's angels in Isaiah 6:3 as they cry: Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. There is no doubt about it - all these, and other scriptures clearly define His divinity and His standing as God the Holy Spirit.

HIS PERSONALITY

Second, let us consider the Person or personality of the Holy Spirit. He is definitely a person, distinct from the Father and the Son. He is not an energy or an influence but is distinctly personal, as are the Father and the Son. One of the reasons for not clearly understanding this truth is an unfortunate translation of the original Greek text into the English Bible. For instance, I refer to Romans 8:16, where we read: The Spirit ITSELF beareth witness with our spirit . . . (emphasis mine). Because the impersonal pronoun "it" is used instead of "he" many have regarded this blessed third Person as a mere influence. However, the majority of texts use the correct personal pronouns, as in John 16:13, 14: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. In discussing His departure, Christ informed the world that He would send another to take His place upon the earth. One can readily see that Christ was not sending an influence but another Person. John 14:16,17: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

The Attributes of a Person

This same Holy Spirit has all the attributes of a person, as you and I do. He can speak (Acts 13:2). He strives with sinners (Genesis 6:3) and can be resisted (Acts 7:51). He can be vexed (Isaiah 63:10) and tested (Acts 5:9). He has feelings because Ephesians 4:30 states: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. It is abundantly clear, then, that He does what other persons do.

Many people still have a difficult time thinking of the Holy Spirit as a person because of the term "spirit." Religionists believe that the Father is a Person, as well as the Son, but reject this truth when it comes to the third member of the Trinity because of the label "spirit." If this has been your theological interpretation, listen to this. The Father was and is a Spirit (John 4:24). The Lord Jesus Christ was a spirit who became flesh to die for sinners. Philippians 2:5-8 states that He was in the form of God (spirit form) but took upon himself the form of flesh. So originally all three were in spirit form. Presently, the Father and Holy Spirit - along with innumerable angels - are still in spirit form. Are they [the angels] not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14). On this basis, God the Father is not a person, Christ was not a person, and the Holy Spirit is not a person, nor are the myriads of angels personalities if "spirit" means a mere emanation from God. We now have only three emanations in eternity past and no source from which to emanate. Perish the thought! All three are persons. Just because human eyes cannot presently visualize the spirit world is no proof that the spirit world cannot be seen with spiritual eyes. We will possess these when the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed (I Corinthians 15:52). There are three Persons presently in heaven - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father and the Holy Spirit are still in spirit form. Only Christ is in the heavenlies with a human body. That is why Colossians 2:9 states: For in [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. This does not mean that the other two are not as much a reality as Christ. It only means that one of the three was chosen to take a body containing blood in order to die for sinners because without shedding of blood is no remission [for sin] (Hebrews 9:22).

The Holy Spirit is God

In conclusion, I trust that you will realize that the Holy Spirit is God, that He is not a mere influence or emanation from the Father or the Son but a real person. When the Bible speaks about Him being the Spirit of God and of Christ, it means that He is the Spirit of the Father because He is sent of the Father. He is also the Spirit of Christ because He is sent by the Saviour. This blessed Holy Spirit is also received at the moment Christ is received. Listen to the Word of God. John 3:5 says: . . . Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Romans 8:9 says: . . . if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. One receives the Holy Spirit when he believes - in fact, it is impossible to believe and be saved apart from the Holy Spirit. This is why I Corinthians 12:13 declares: For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body . . . . Every Bible scholar will tell you that the placing of an individual into Christ's body accompanies salvation. Notice that it is the Holy Spirit's baptism which produces the miracle. This baptism is not a second experience, but a transformation into Christ's body performed by the Holy Spirit at salvation. Call your experience by other descriptive titles if you so desire but do not call it the "baptism" because that is a once-for-all experience which the Holy Spirit administers at salvation.

The promise of the Saviour takes place at salvation. Jesus said: . . .I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever . . . he . . . shall be in you (John 14:16,17). Paul could say: . . . the Holy Ghost . . . is given. unto us (Romans 5:5). This text in context teaches that the Spirit is given alike to all who are saved. The word us is not a select group of believers, but all who have been washed in the blood. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God . . . (I Corinthians 2:12). No consideration could even be given for a moment to the assumption that the Spirit is intended only for a restricted company among the saved. No, we have all been made to drink into one Spirit (I Corinthians 12:13). If you have salvation you have the Spirit; if you have not the Spirit you have never been saved. . . if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his (Romans 8:9). Now, the Spirit can have more of us and that is called the filling of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) which we shall study in a later chapter. However, let's get one thought straight: If you are saved, you have the Spirit; if you are lost, you do not. If you receive Christ today, the Father and Spirit will also become a part of you, as you become a partaker of the divine nature (II Peter 1:4). Do it now let the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit into your life.

Our Exalted Position In Christ

Job says ~

" In famine He shall redeem me from death;
in war from the power of the sword.
I shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue,
neither shall I be afraid of destruction when it comes."

" I will laugh, neither will I be afraid if the beasts of the earth.
For I shall be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts
of the field shall be at peace with me."

" And I will know that my tabernacle shall be in peace;
and I will visit my habitation and not sin. Thy seed shall be great,
thy offspring as the grass of the earth."

"Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of corn cometh in its season."
(Job 5)


This is our inheritance with the Father. We are even now, right now as I write and you read, seated in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus! May God forgive us for not thanking Him more and shouting when we have a new revelation of what this means. Not only what it means for us, but what it means for those who are acquaintences and family. They will also share in our blessed place in Christ Jesus.

The Book of Rememberance

MALACHI 3:16-18

"Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another; and the LORD listened, and heard it, and a book of Remerberance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD and that thought upon His Name. And they shall be Mine, saith the LORD of Hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not..."


This passage speaks of all those who both fear God and speak to each other of Him. What is amazing is that our conversations are being recorded; written in a book! Who is doing the writing? Who is this Scribe in the Heaven of Heavens? What is written is not just our words, but it also says those that even thought upon His Name! Amazing!

God says we shall be His. His special treasure, His hidden ones to be finally revealed for all to see. The Bible says that even the very creation itself moans and groans; awaiting the revelation of the children of God.

What a day that will be! Hang on! Do not lose heart! Our redemption, and the redemption of all creation is at hand!

HOLINESS: Seeing God-Asher Intrater

Holiness: Seeing God By Asher Intrater   Holiness is the pure and perfect character of God. He is so holy, that He is actually "Holy, Holy, Holy (Isaiah 6:2)." Isaiah saw Him in that holiness. "My eyes have seen the King (Isaiah 6:5)." While we cannot attain that level of holiness, He does demand us to become holy like Him. "Be holy for I am holy (Leviticus 19:2)".     To be holy we must put a distance between ourselves and the influences in society which encourage immorality (I Thessalonians 4:3, Numbers 15:39-40, Job 31:1). Because of the increased technology in the arts and entertainment, advertising and media, there is a flood of lustful imagery today unknown to any previous generation.     The human heart has the ability to see spiritual things (John 3:3). We have spiritual "eyes" (Ephesians 1:18, Acts 26:18). When pictures of lust fill our imagination, we cannot see the things of the kingdom of God. Purity of heart enables us to see God (Matthew 5:8). Without holiness we cannot see God - "Holiness, without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)." If without holiness we cannot see God, then with holiness we can.     Holiness is a means to see God. The purpose and motivation to be holy is to see Him. Holiness is simply looking in the right direction. What Isaiah saw in chapter 6 is promised to us all in chapter 33. "Your eyes will see the King in His beauty (Isaiah 33:17)." Holiness is the ability to see God's beauty; it is the desire of our hearts to focus our attention on Him. Let's not let lust rob us of such a beautiful vision.

PSALM 33 ~

"By the Word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathered the waters of the sea together as a heap: He layeth up the depth in storehouses."

"Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spake, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast."

When things seem most out of control, God is in complete control. We are the sheep of His pasture; His special possession. He has carved our names in His hands; we will never be forgotten.

  Three hundred foot trees down in our yard after storm. Last evening, my dear Friend and Brother, a 92 year old Pastor prayed with us over the phone for protection during the storm and that the electric would stay on. Prayer works! One of the trees brushed up against our home; we hear it fall as the storm blew through. Others fell in the yard; all away from our home. God has His way in all of the storms of life we encounter. We will never, ever have our faith increase unless we go through these things. My heart jumped in my throat several times, that is the human aspect of trials and storms, but calmness came only when I kept my mind stayed on God. We are given a precious promise by God, "I WILL KEEP YOU IN PERFECT PEACE if you keep your mind stayed (focused) only on ME."

Rough Spring!

The months of April and May has been an interesting month from a physical and spiritual perspective. I have had a rash that has spread all over my body and the itch and burn is almost unbearable. I have been to my doctor twice and he put me on a series of anti-biotic, which did nothing. Then I was on a series of steroid treatments for 13 days and still nothing. The Doctor sent me to a skin doctor and he gave me a medical cream, a conditioner and a steroid shot. Still nothing!


They took a biopsy several days ago and I am to get the results shortly. The rash is slowing starting to clear up, somewhat, although it has spread; it does not burn and itch so much. I thought quite a bit of Job sitting on the ash pile scratching himself with broken pottery. How he must have felt; and his friends did not bring much comfort. The steroid pills caused my blood pressure to go out of whack and I could not function for almost a week without feeling very, very bad.



In addition, I had a scan done on my neck veins at the request of my heart doctor to see if there was blockage. The scan showed that there is. Several days later I went to my dear friend Rev. Cooper's for coffee and prayer and he anointed my neck with oil and we claimed healing. Two weeks later my heart doctor again asked me if I would have a C-Scan of the neck to see how bad the blockage is. I did. There was no blockage in the right neck veins and the scan showed that there was some blockage in the left side. He called me at home and said this was very unusual and there was something out of order; would I agree to another scan, free of charge? I told him exactly what happened; God had
intervened on my behalf because of our prayer and anointing. He said he would still like to do the other scan, for free. I agreed and said that it would confirm my healing.


This scan showed that the right side was in good shape but some blockage in the left. How much he did not know; he could not decipher the numbers or pictures. Would I have another C-Scan, at no charge! I said yes and am waiting for the date of the scan.


Through all of this, the painful burning itch and rash and the blocked arteries the doctor is convinced I still have, I was led to a passage of Scripture that showed me exactly what was going on. It is found in Isaiah 24:14,15 ~


"They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea (which I did two weeks ago in the Outer Banks of N.C.!) Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the Name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea."


Glorify God in the fires! Anyone can do this when things are fine; but what of the fiery trials which test our faith? There is only one way to learn to do this; and that is to do it. God has been here all of the way; even in the dark sleepless nights as I have cried out to Him for releif. He is answering my prayer and I am learning volumns about Him and myself in the process.

Visitation On Our Nation

We are fast approaching the place where Israel of old in the days of Jeremiah found themselves. After years of preaching, prophecies, signs and wonders by God's Prophets, Israel still turned a blind eye to the ways of God. It got so bad that they would not even acknowledge God. They became brazen in their sin and thought because things remained the same, they would never have to give account for their actions.


Jeremiah 51:17,18 gives their mindset: "Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they will perish." Things became so dire in Jeremiah's day in Jerusalem that women were cooking and eating their own children! Think of that! The shops were full, the malls were packed, stores were selling produce like there was no tomorrow; but in the day of visitation they were found in a very grave state.


What of those who obey God in the day of visitation? We have many examples to go by. The chapter in Jeremiah 51 continues (verses 19-21) The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of His inheritance: the LORD of Hosts is His Name. Thou (we) are His battle axe and weapon of war: for with us God will break in pieces the nations and destroy kingdoms; and with us He will break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with us He will break the chariot and his rider...."


Never forget-We are His inheritance. We must not fear no matter what falls on our nation. God will protect and keep us in all of our ways. There are dozens of examples of this fact. In Joshua 2 we find a lady of ill repute protected when the mighty walls of Jericho fell down around her. In the Book of Kings and Chronicles we see David chased and hunted like an animal by King Saul and his armies and supporters. Yet David is secure. In Egypt during their captivity when God finally decided it was time for Him to act on behalf of His Children there were great plagues and darkness so dark it could be felt; but not dark and no plagues touched the Children of Israel!


When Jerusalem was in the middle of falling and the Babylonian armies were carrying most away captive to Babylon, God instructed Jeremiah to buy property in Jerusalem. (Jeremiah 32) God is the God of all flesh; is anything to hard for Him? We must not lose heart as judgment begins to fall. He is on our side! We are His battle axe as we stand against the forces of evil; forces of doubt, fear, unbelief and sin. We are the victors. The horse and rider, even the mighty chariot are under our feet.


God has made an everlasting covenant with us and will not turn away from us. He has put His fear in our hearts and we shall not depart from Him. Just as He will bring great evil against those living in rebellion, He will watch over us with an everlasting eye that never slumbers or sleeps. Memorize His promises; they are as sure as the rising of the sun and the setting of the same.

A Difficult Note!

I have been experiencing something that I knew was very important, but I have learned first hand how serious it is for Believer's to keep their word, say what they mean and do what they say. This may seem trivial to many, but from a spiritual perspective it is very important.


We have been in a long process of having a front porch added to our home. Two ministers from a church we attend are the contractors. The building permit was acquired on Feb. 9 of this year. Prior to construction I was told by one of the fellows that it would take perhaps three weeks to build the structure. This was over 90 days ago!


Our winter here has been very mild. Weather has been favorable for construction. Days would go by with no contact with the minister in charge. Telephone calls were not returned. Dead silence. Work days consisted of as little as two hours, then absence. The longest work day was perhaps four or five hours. Three different times I was told that in another week or two the construction would be completed.


I would pretty much expect this from a general contractor; many are prone to stretching the truth, fudging the figures, or whatever nice phrase one would want to put on it. I call it lying. I am approaching this from the perspective on one who does not know Christ, and one who is watching those who say that they do know Him. I am concerned!


I have heard these fellows say with great confidence that they have heard from the "Holy Ghost", He tells them what to preach, what to say, and what to do. Is the "Holy Ghost" present when they say they will do something and they do not follow through with what they say? Most believe that cursing, using God's Name before saying "damn" is using the LORD'S name in vain. I believe that it goes much deeper than that. Speaking one concept with our lips and doing the opposite in our daily lives is also using His Name in vain. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. What is truly in us comes out on a daily basis. Thank God for forgiveness!


I am learning the importance as a follower of Jesus that my yes be yes, and my no be no. Say what I mean, do what I say. If I am not able to do so, or live up to what I have said I need to notify the other parties as soon as possible.


It is as if some Believer's feel they are not accountable to others. "God will forgive me, all I have to do is ask...." This is no way to live; it sets a very bad example and shows a lack of credibility both in business and our personal relationships. This whole affair has made everything the other person says suspect. If one is so lax in their daily accountability to others, what are they really hearing from God?


There are two verses that have come to mind over the past month that address this issue. One is found in Psalm 50:21. It says, "These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such a one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes..."


One of the things God is saying here is that we thought He was just like us! He will understand. We are not accountable nor do we have to answer to anyone. God keeps silence during these times; hoping we will come to our senses, repent and change our ways. If we do not, He will reprove us.


Another verse with this concept of thinking everything is o.k., that the "Holy Ghost" understands and overlooks our actions is found in Isaiah 50:11, it says, "Behold, all of you who kindle a fire,m that compass yourselves about with sparks; walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of Mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow."


It is as if God is saying you have decided who I am, you have kindled your own fire to walk by, go ahead then, walk by your fire, your revelation of who I am. But, you will eventually lie down in sorrow because it was not Me who was leading you; you would never listen! You did not obey! You did not do what I said or live by My principals for life; you made your own, saying it was of Me!


My prayer through this whole experience; "God forgive me for the times I have lied; not misspoke, but outright lied. Forgive me for using my words loosely and not do what I said I was going to do. Forgive me for saying one thing and doing another; for the times I speak of You then do what is not pleasing to You. Forgive me for using Your wonderful Name in vain. 


Fill my heart with forgiveness, grace and mercy. We are all on a learning curve and need to be receptive to the leading's of God in our lives.

Asher Intrater At the turn of the 1900's, one of the leading Zionist activists in Eastern Europe was Rabbi Nathan Milikovski. In 1910 his son Benzion was born in Warsaw. The Milikovski family immigrated to Israel in 1920. In his writings Rabbi Milikovski would use the pen name "Netanyahu."  Later Benzion Milikovski would adopt that for his Hebrew family name. Benzion studied at Hebrew University and became part of the circle of intellectuals surrounding Professor Joseph Klausner. Benzion went on to become a professor of history, his seminal work being a 1,400 page study of the Spanish Inquisition (claiming that the Marranos were not forced conversions but of their own free will). He co-edited the Hebrew Encyclopedia, together with Professor Isaiah Liebowitz. The father of "Revisionist" Zionism was Zev Jabotinsky. Jabotinsky had two primary disciples: Menahem Begin, who later became Prime Minister, and Benzion Netanyahu. When Jabotinsky died in 1940, Benzion took his place as the intellectual ideologue of the Revisionist movement. The Netanyahu family moved to the United States and Benzion became a leading voice warning against the upcoming disaster facing the Jews of Europe. As a "Revisionist," Benzion believed that all the land of Israel, "on both sides of the Jordan," belongs to the Jewish people. The partition plan of the United Nations was ratified by vote on November 29, 1947, recognizing the statehood of Israel. While the ratification was accepted with joy by the overwhelming majority of the Jews in Israel, Benzion stood in opposition. The Netanyahu family moved back to Israel to be part of the founding of the new state. While Benzion's first son, Yoni, who later was killed as commander of the famous Israeli commando attack at Entebbe, was born in New York, his second and third sons, Benjamin and Ido, were born in Israel shortly after the family's return. During his earlier studies at Hebrew University, Benzion met Zilah, who later became his wife. Zilah's sister also had a son named Benjamin, and she gave him the nickname, "Bibi." Zilah decided to do the same and the two both were called "Bibi." Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu, now serving in his second term as Prime Minister of Israel, speaking of his father's influence on his life, once said, "to understand the son you must get to know the dad." Benzion Netanyahu passed away this Monday morning, at the age of 102, clear minded and sharp-tongued to the end! His funeral in Jerusalem was attended by the top political and military leaders of the country. His sons, Benjamin and Ido, read the "Kaddish" and gave eulogies. President Shimon Peres, in his eulogy, turning to Benjamin Netanyahu, said, "Your father wrote history and you are making history in the same sentiment and legacy." Old Hymn From Childhood

I used to sing in the church's where my father ministered when I was very young. I specifically remember singing a hymn that was one of my Grandfather's favorites if my memory serves me correctly. It was in a small church in Shepherdstown, WV and there were perhaps 50 or so parishioner's.

I was the song bird of my three brothers. Looking back on perhaps 50 years, the words to this song give me great insight of what I have experienced over those years, and more importantly, the purpose of many of those experiences.

                   HE WASHED MY EYES WITH TEARS

He tore it all apart and looked inside,
He found it full of fear and foolish pride."


"He swept away the things that made me blind
And then I saw the clouds were silver lined;

"He washed my eyes with tears that I might see,
The glory of Himself revealed to me;
I did not know that He has wounded hands
I saw the blood He spilt upon the sands.
I saw the marks of shame and wept and cried;
He was my substitute for me He died;
And now I'm glad He came so tenderly;
And washed my eyes with tears that I might see."


* Many, many are the afflictions of the righteous, as the Bible says, but rest assured that each and every one serves an eternal purpose. The steps of a righteous person are ordered by God; He does what is necessary to bring us closer to Him. Our revelation of His faithfulness and His great compassion's are evident in our past times of tears. King David cried into the night in his effort to find the heart of God in every circumstance. We are no different. It will be worth it all when we see Jesus!  

The Sifting Process

Luke 22:31, "And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat..."
Are you being sifted? We, like Peter, have an Advocate with the Father. The sifting of Peter took to pride and arrogance away in short order. I cannot begin to imagine how he must have felt after the rooster crowed three times after he denied that he even knew Jesus. What horror must of overcome him; what terror and shame as he ran to cover his face! Like Judas, I feel that he contemplated taking his own life.


He had been so bold and brazen in his statements regarding his faithfulness to Christ. He even walked on the water! Is it possible that the sifting was necessary to remove the pride, arrogance, self assurance from Peter? If anything was going to do this for Peter, this must have surely done it. He finally realized that he was nothing in himself; he must be totally dependent upon Christ in all things.


Hosea 6:1-3 gives an excellent picture of this process that God uses from time to time; even on a national level. "Come and let us return unto the LORD: for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He has smitten, and He will bind us up. After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight. Then we shall know, if we follow on to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth."


Hosea is saying "do not lose heart or hope!" He will heal for He has torn, or allowed the tearing, like Christ allowed Satan to sift Peter. It all serves a purpose, no matter how painful it is. And do not be deceived, it is very painful. But, it serves an eternal purpose. Hosea also says, "then we shall follow on to know the LORD."


We will know Him in a deeper sense; in a way that could not have happened any other way. "His going forth is prepared as the morning". God does not have to make things up as He goes along; it has been predetermined before the morning breaks what will happen to those who love Him. Never think that He is playing "catch up" on our behalf. Just as Christ told Peter, "after you have repented, go and strengthen your brethren."


We learn through the sifting. We learn about ourselves, the faithfulness of our God, and our total dependence upon God. We learn that no matter how far we think we have come in our knowledge or walk with Him, we will always be totally dependent upon Him. We learn that we cannot go by our feelings; He is always with us, praying for us and giving us strength and hope through the Holy Spirit residing in us.


Isaiah 30:28-30 is an excellent example of those of the nations who do not have our hope in God during the sifting, "And His breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err."


But what of us? "Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the Mighty One of Israel. And the LORD shall cause His glorious voice to be heard, and show the lightening down His arm, with the indignation of His anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones."


Just like a stream of brimstone sets fire to the rebellious ones, His mighty arm is just as capable to save those that are His. We are His! He is with us in the sifting process. Never lose heart; it is serving an eternal purpose. He who has promised to be with us until the very end is faithful and true.


This life is just a dress rehearsal for our station in eternity!

Bold Prayers

By Don Finto (excerpt) In the late 7th century before the coming of Yeshua, Hezekiah was a king that “did what was right in the in the eyes of the Lord” (2 Kings 18:3). When the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and invaded Judah, however, the situation seemed hopeless. Hezekiah cried out to the Lord. God heard his prayers and sent the prophet Isaiah to proclaim the downfall of the Assyrians and the deliverance of Judah. "That night the Angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning - there were all the dead bodies. So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew" (19:35-36). If God can destroy an entire army and bring a mighty nation to its knees in one night, He is fully capable of meeting all the needs and fulfilling all the dreams that He initiates in our lives. The Bible is a testimony of God’s glory and power. And that same power that King Hezekiah and the people of Judah saw on that great day is available to you today! So let us pray bold prayers and expect the impossible!

Sing Praises!

" Let the people praise Thee, O God;
let all the people praise Thee.
O let the nations be glad and sing for joy;
for Thou shalt judge the people righteously,
and govern the nations upon the earth. Selah."


"Let the people praise Thee, O God;
let all the people praise Thee."

"Then shall the earth yield her increase;
and God, even our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him."


I am finding out that praise to God, no matter our circumstance, surroundings or feeling is a key that moves His heart. In these four verses in Psalm 67 the word praise is mentioned four times; blessing from God is mentioned in various ways after we offer praise; we will sing and be glad, the earth will yield her increase and we will be blessed of God.


The key is praise to Him!


"Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah: To Him that rideth upon the heavens, which were of old; lo, He doth send out His voice, and that a mighty voice."


"Ascribe ye strength unto God: His excellency is over Israel, and His strength is in the clouds. O God, Thou art terrible out of Thy holy places: the God of Israel is He that giveth strength and power unto His people. Selah." (Psalm 68:32-35)

" The name Gethsemane in Hebrew is "Gat Shmanim, meaning "Oil Press." It is the place where olives are brought and crushed; the skin and pit are strained and separated. The result is pure olive oil. Oil is a consistent biblical symbol for the anointing of the Holy Spirit. There is little doubt that Yeshua (Jesus) chose this place with this name on purpose."


"We all want the oil; we want the anointing; the power of the Holy Spirit. The anointing oil brings protection, provision and prosperity (Psalm 23:5), wisdom and authority to rule (1 Samuel 16:13) joy (Psalm:45:7. Hebrews 1:9), healing and deliverance (Mark 6:13, James 5:14), light and revelation (Exodus 25:6, 1 John 2:27, Revelation 3:18); ability to preach and prophecy (Isaiah 61:1) intimacy in worship (Song of Solomon 1:3, Matthew 25:3, Mark 14:3), and much more."


There is a dynamic relationship between the oil and the press. They are opposites that balance out one another. At Gat Shmanim (Gethsemane) Yesuua (Jesus) embraced the cross. He forced His will to submit (Matthew 26:39). It is a place of darkness, depression and difficulty (Matthew 26:37). It is a place of self denial (Matthew 16:24); a place to be crushed; to obey unto death; to be tested; to pass through humiliation and suffering; to intercede to the point of blood, sweat, and tears."

On the other hand, the purpose of the press is to obtain the oil. To suffer in obedience without obtaining that oil is not according to the heart of God. The press is for the oil. Thoughts On Angels

They are not abstractions-figments of our imagination

The have intellect

They are not limited to material bodies

They can only be one place at a time

They appear as men

They have human functions

They do not die or reproduce

They lead by their hand, they can touch and be touched

They indulge in combat-one killed 185,000 Assyrians in one night

They are spirit beings but can take human form when required

They can be in our presence, entertained, without our knowing they are angels

They are greater than men, less powerful than God

They are organized and have rank, position

There is an Arch angel named Michael, the angel in charge of Israel

There are Chief Princes among their rank

There are Cherubim-plural-they guarded the Tree of Life in the garden of Eden

There are Cherub- singular

Satan was a Cherub

God said He would send His angels-He has angels that do His bidding

There are angels that are evil and are not loyal to God

We will judge Angels at the last day judgment (1 Corinthians 6:-3) * (Randy) - This tells me that angels can make mistakes, not do what they are told, could have done better?? Just some thoughts…not a doctrine

They apparently have free will to obey or disobey

There are Seraphim's – these are flaming fire (Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4)

I believe we have our own personal Angel that watches over us

Jesus said that as it was in the days of Noah, it would be like that in the days before He returns

Angels disrobed themselves and cohabiting with women in the days before Noah; they produced a strange offspring of giants and men of renown

There were still giants in the land in the days of King David; it is as if Satan was trying to pollute the human gene pool in an effort to prevent the "seed of the woman from bruising his head..." as foretold after the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

We are not to worship Angels, the good ones are God's messengers

Pulling The Cart with a Rope

I believe our society in large part has turned against the things of God that represent holiness. People in large part seem to think if everyone just works together for the good of all; if everyone would all just go along with what the majority believes we would live in peace. Pro-life side by side with pro abortion, traditional marriage right beside gay marriage and that there are many roads to heaven; all you have to do is believe.The Book of Isaiah speaks of a similar society in his day that mirror's ours. And, what is important for us, Isaiah was instructed by God how to respond.


Isaiah 8: 11-14 says, " For the LORD spoke thus to me and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people....Do not say we will band together and be victorious: do not fear what they fear, do not be afraid. Sanctify the LORD of Host (armies) Himself and let Him be your dread. And He shall be for a sanctuary, but for a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both houses of Israel."


Chapter 5:18-20 gives picture of a people that have convinced themselves that what they had accomplished would be admired by God. They were in a hurry for His decision of what they had done. " Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!"


What were the thoughts of God? The same as His thoughts are for many today; "Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"


It is an awful thought to think that what we have been working out on our own way, with our own will and plans could very well be for nought. If we leave God out of our plans they may succeed for a short season but bear no real fruit. When our nation and the world will finally reach the days of accounting it will be too late and many will be astonished and not know what is happening. We are not to be like that. We are children of the Living God. He is ever ready to comfort and guide us.


Let God be our fear and our dread- acknowledge His power,  do His will, His way. Let Him be our protection. We are not to fear as the world fears. Brother David Wilkerson has stated that our response to very bad news or disaster is a sudden tinge of fear; this is human. But we are to recover quickly and realise that God is in control of all events. We are safe in Him. We are secure; do not fear any event that may come upon our nation or the world.

God Shall Strengthen

I have had a trying week at work. Issues with my superiors never end. One fellow is an absolute terror and he does everything possible to make my job as miserable as he can. Even to the point of lying, false inferences to his superiors and even higher ups in the Administrative Staff in town. With great difficulty I am finally getting to a place where I can pray for this poor fellow when I realize that he is running out of time to make amends to all of the people he has defamed and caused great difficulty.


I really feel from the LORD that He has shown me the deeper side of our battles with people we do not particularly care for or even like. They need deep, serious prayer and intercession to God on their behalf. When I remember what God has done with me; His patience, love and mercy, I am humbled. How can God forgive one like me, and not this fellow also?


I was totally honest with God when I prayed about this the first time. I told God that I felt like such a hypocrite! Like I was lying to God when I prayed for this fellow's salvation from judgement. After this honest statement I started to see the eternal state of such people; even people I dislike. The LORD showed me in a real sense in my spirit that time is short. Never another chance after death to make amends, but judgment, never to be reversed.


I watched this fellow when there was an event at our school and although there were dozens of people gathered around eating and having a good social time enjoying each others company, there was this fellow, sitting by himself. Not a soul around him. I started to get offended that he, my supervisor did not tell the rest of the crew that the food was free, to come help ourselves, it did not take long for me to look at my waste line and realize I could do without a meal; do not get mad!


A poor, lost soul that is so miserable that he does not know what to do with himself. Only in Christ is there any comfort or rest. We are all running short on time to make things right in all areas. God is a great God of forgiveness, not willing that any should perish. Jesus died for all; He so love the world, not just us alone.


It does not take me long to think of the one person that I dislike the most; ;it is this fellow. I am getting over this through intercession on behalf of his salvation. God loves him as well as me. Although I was called in front of my superiors because of some of his actions to cause me harm, I pray for him.


Today in prayer before I took a nap, I was led to a passage of Scripture that explained for me what I have been going through. We can all use the concepts therein and apply it to our most difficult circumstances. God's word is eternal; like Him, it never changes. The passage is in Psalm 31:19-24~


" Oh how great is Thy goodness which Thou hath laid up for them that fear Thee; which Thou hath wrought for them that trust in Thee before the sons of men."


"Thou shalt hide them in the secret of Thy Presence from the pride of man: Thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues."


" Blessed be the LORD, for He hath shewed me His marvellous kindness in a strong city (a very difficult place). For I said in my haste, I am cut off forever before Thine eyes. (I felt vulnerable, hung out to dry and on my own until I prayed for those causing trouble)...

"Nevertheless (!) Thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee. O love the LORD, all ye His saints:
for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer (God will eventually take care of our adversaries) Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD."


No matter the issue; Fear God, Hope in God, Cry out and trust Him. Do nothing in haste, He will hide and keep us. He has a pavilion in which we can run. He preserves His faithful because He has said He would. We have an entire Bible of examples of Him doing so; usually at the last minute. Brother David Wilkerson used to say that the hardest part of faith is the "last half hour"!


The Psalmist says "He prepares a table for me in the presence of mine enemies"! A table is for dining and conversation and there is food at a this particular table of enemies that contains a meat we do not usually get to eat! God prepared that table. Do not run, He serves the dish! Oh how much we learn as we go to that table! He is also Master of the occasion and nothing will happen that He would not allow. We learn through the entire meal.

Hope in the LORD, not ourselves, again I say, Hope in the LORD!

HUNTING A PARTRIDGE IN THE MOUNTAINS

Much of the church in our generation seems to have been on a never-ending pursuit of God—only to emerge with little fruit to show for it. As a result, I believe a cry has come into the hearts of many of God’s people today: “I have sought God in the only way that I know, the only way I have been taught. I have tried to find Him in all the places they said He was, but I could never seem to lay hold of Him. I feel like the psalmist who cried out, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?’ (Psalms 22:1–2). I cry, but it is as if God does not hear me. Why?”


Suddenly it seems all our religious activity has come to a screeching halt, and we realize that despite all our seeking of God, we still fail to impact our society the way the church of Jesus Christ ought to. Now we finally have the sense to stop and ask the question: Lord, why have we been seeking You but You have not been answering us? I believe something within the story of Saul and David answers this question. Let’s look at the relationship between them as a type of your and my relationship with Jesus Christ.


  SAUL AND DAVID
 Although he was king over the nation of Israel and master of his own destiny, Saul eventually came up against an enemy that he instinctively knew was too strong for him (see 1 Samuel 17). He and all the people under his leadership stood trembling before a Philistine giant named Goliath. In the midst of his dilemma, David, a type of Christ, came to Saul with words of courage and faith: “Do not fear. I am going to go fight this battle for you, and I am going to win” (see 1 Samuel 17:32, 37).

Saul ended up embracing what appeared to be a foolish battle plan. A young boy filled with a heart of faith and a desire to see God glorified in the earth went out to fight for him. It was a battle plan that Saul would not have considered had he remained strong in himself. Similarly, if we have the courage to admit it, we would not have considered Christ if we had not eventually come to recognize our inability to win our battles in our own strength.


David went into the valley and decapitated the power of the enemy’s army. Saul soon found himself in hot pursuit of the enemy although he was actually getting the spoils of another man’s victory. When you and I embraced the cross, we too, entered into a power and victory that was not our own. It was Jesus Christ who won the battle over the powers of darkness. It was Jesus who unlocked our prison doors, brought healing to our wounded hearts and gave sight to our blinded eyes.
After this great victory, Saul took David home and made him a part of his household (see 1 Samuel 18:2). Similarly, when we came to Christ, we didn’t leave Him at church. We took Him home just as Saul took David home. David sat at Saul’s table, just as you have Jesus at your table when you open the Bible and spend time with Him.


Saul also benefitted from David’s skillful musicianship (see 1 Samuel 16:16–23). The Bible doesn’t specify, but it is likely that a spirit of worship coming from David’s heart as he played on that harp caused an evil spirit which was troubling Saul to let go of him. Today we have the assurance that the Lord “...will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). Perhaps there have been days when you felt heavy and oppressed, and your mind seemed to be caught in a tangled web of attacks. Yet after worshiping, you found that your mind was suddenly clear and that this evil had lost its hold.


In many ways, we find ourselves in a place very similar to where Saul was in his relationship with David. Eventually, however, something happened that began to separate the two of them. Likewise, I believe that in our generation, something has begun to separate Christ from His church. If we are wise, we will stop and consider: What happened in this relationship between Saul and David?


  THE TURNING POINT
 “And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music. And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward” (1 Samuel 18:6–9).

Here is the key: Up until this point, Saul was still in control of his own life, and David was merely a wonderful addition to his kingdom. This is exactly how many people regard Jesus Christ today, which is not surprising since that is the way He has been portrayed in much of the preaching of our generation. Add Jesus to your plans, add Him to your career, add Him to your self-image. Just add Jesus! He is the power of God and will make a wonderful addition to your kingdom.
Things took a turn in their relationship when one day it dawned on Saul: David was increasing and he was decreasing. Remember, John the Baptist said of Jesus, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” Suddenly Saul realized, “Wait, David hasn’t come to be a wonderful addition to my kingdom—he has come to be the next king!” From hat day forward, Saul gathered his men and began to pursue David.

Most people do not have a problem adding Jesus to their agenda, but the thought of His becoming king and their becoming His subjects is where the real struggle begins. One day they realize the Lord is asking something of them that does not agree with their plans, and they suddenly find themselves at a juncture. Unfortunately many people, just like Saul, refuse to yield the throne. Of course, very few would have the courage to openly admit, “I am walking away from Jesus,” so they continue their pursuit of Christ. However, the pursuit is now only for the purpose of validating a throne they refuse to yield—an attempt to get the Lord to agree with their own personal agenda.

  A FUTILE PURSUIT
 “And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon? Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph” (1 Samuel 26:1–2).


What a classic picture of the type of pursuit of God so common in our generation! Saul would receive a report about where David was, and then with three thousand of his men, he would set off to find him. When the search failed, another report came and off they would go in another direction. Yet in this whole pursuit, he was never able to find David. How frustrating it must have been to always come back empty and seeming like less of a king than when he had set out—a sentiment shared by many today as they return home empty after attending the latest conference or supposed manifestation of Christ.

At one point in the pursuit, David and his servant Abishai had entered the very camp where Saul and his armies were sleeping. “So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them” (1 Samuel 26:12). David took Saul’s spear—a symbol of his strength and ability to make war. He also took Saul’s water bottle, which is the replenishment of God. In the New Testament, this is the spring of living water that Christ promises to those who truly belong to Him.


After they had climbed a hill opposite Saul’s camp and were a safe distance away, David called over to Saul: “Do not let my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains” (1 Samuel 26:20, NKJV). David was essentially saying, “You are seeking me, but you cannot find me. It is as if you are hunting a flea or a partridge in the mountains.” Did you know that a partridge can camouflage itself? It may be a foot away from you, yet it can make itself the same color as the leaves and you will easily walk right past it. David continued to call over to Saul, “...Behold the king’s spear! And let one of the young men come over and fetch it” (1 Samuel 26:22). In other words, “We are a mountain apart, but here it is if you want it. Send one of the young men over to fetch it.” If only Saul had possessed a measure of humility in his heart at that point and said, “No, David, I am the one who should have been guarding it. I will come and get it.” It was a wonderful opportunity for Saul to humble himself—a moment that could have made a difference in history. In a sense, he would have been bowing his knee before the real king.


Now consider this scene again, keeping in mind David as the Christ-type and Saul as a type of what the church has become after walking in the stubbornness of our own ways. In our spiritual slumber, the Lord has come and taken our spear and our water bottle. He has taken our ability to conquer and removed what refreshes us. And now, just as David cried out from the hill, Christ is crying out to our generation from Calvary one more time, “Here is your strength to make war; here is the Living Water you are looking for. Come and get it!” Responding to this call requires humility. If you try to go up a mountain standing erect, you will fall over backwards. You must go up in a position of humility.
Saul could not bring himself to lay hold of the spiritual principle in this, just as there are people today who refuse to humble themselves and allow Christ to be Lord of all. Seek Him all you want—travel the world; hear about a revival in some country and get on the first plane over—but if you are not willing to bow and let Christ be Lord of all, your seeking will be in vain and you will constantly come home weak, empty and dry. Eventually you will reach the erroneous conclusion that Christ cannot be found and that revival in personal measure is just an illusion.


  THE SEARCH IS OVER
 Interestingly, the Scriptures also tell the story of four hundred distressed, debt-ridden men who headed toward where David was (see 1 Samuel 22). The beauty of it all was that they did not have a hard time finding him. Saul with his three thousand men, probably including some of the best spies and scouts in the land, travelled all over the countryside and could not find David. Yet four hundred discontented men just got up one day and essentially said, “Enough of this! We’re going where the anointing of God is.” So they went into the cave where David was, just as we are called in our generation to come outside the gate and join Christ (see Hebrews 13:12–13). They went outside of the system that had rejected Him as Lord, and David became captain over them.
These men did not come in their own strength or with their own resources, for they did not have any left. They did not come with a plan—they went to get the plan. It was as if each of them had concluded, “I would rather die with David than live in the kingdom of Saul with his powerless pursuit. I am going to where the power of God is.”

How was it that many of these men later went on to accomplish incredible feats—eventually being named among David’s mighty men (see 2 Samuel 23)? I believe it all started in that cave. I can imagine David telling them the story of the day he defeated Goliath. After all, what else was there to do in the cave? The four hundred would say, “David, tell us again. Tell us how you had the courage to go into that valley!”


And so David would rehearse the story over and over again—how he knew it just was not right for the men of God to be cowering on the mountainside while this giant perpetually raised his voice against the glory and honor of God. “Then the Spirit of God came upon me, and I stood there and called, ‘You come to me with a staff and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord God of hosts, the God that you have defied!’”


I can just see courage and strength rising in these men’s hearts day after day until they finally concluded, “If God did that for David, and if that is how He is going to be honored, then I refuse to live in mediocrity any longer!” It is a type of those in our generation who say, “I am not searching anymore. I have found Him, for I am no longer trying to force my agenda into the kingdom of God. I have chosen instead to be abandoned to the will of God and to live for the honor of His name!” The four hundred found strength as they followed in the footsteps of David—just as those of us who are willing to follow in the footsteps of Christ will be empowered to change the course of history.

The Lord will once again take the weak, the discouraged, the disillusioned—the one who is an honest and sincere seeker of God. He will use the one who is not trying to bring any agenda to Him, but rather is seeking and walking in His will. Throughout history we have seen that when ordinary people seek the face of God with honesty, they find the fulfillment of the promise, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13, NKJV).

I pray that in this hour, God will give us the courage to bend our knee to the lordship of Jesus Christ—that He will give us the power to humble ourselves and stop pursuing Christ for the wrong reasons. No more coming into the prayer closet and presenting God with our own plan, expecting Him to bless it. Instead, let us go in and find God’s plan, for there is no other plan and no other way. One more time, let us yield ourselves to His will, unto the death if necessary. That is how we will be set free from this futile pursuit and truly empowered to influence our generation. Hallelujah!
